2006년 최고의 소설로 [남쪽으로 튀어]를 꼽았던 유시민 전 국회의원은 “원작과 영화를 비교하는 재미가 쏠쏠했다”는 말로 관객들과의 대화를 시작했다. 이에 임순례 감독은 “원작과 달리 어른의 시선으로 그린 점과 한국 현실을 녹여낸 최해갑 캐릭터가 영화만의 매력”이라고 꼽았다.
한편, ‘남쪽으로 튀어’는 일본소설가 오쿠다히데오의 원작으로 한 것으로 현재 절찬리에 상영 중이다.
