Storyline : India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) was not prepared to lose her father and best friend Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic auto accident. The solitude of her woodsy family estate, the peace of her tranquil town, and the unspoken somberness of her home life are suddenly upended by not only this mysterious accident, but by the sudden arrival of her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whom she never knew existed. When Charlie moves in with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), India thinks the void left by her father’s death is finally being filled by his closet bloodline. Soon after his arrival, India comes to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. Review:
It is too enigmatic films to me. During the entire movie, I thought not “left much to be desired”, but “What is this”. It seems to me like contemporary art. I remember I saw the article that billions of major painting were sold at Christie’s Sotheby’s auction. I was indeed disconcerted the fact that Mark Rothko’s No.1 $ 70 million deal was. Why so expensive? Why applaud such as these works? Where is the top of painting, and where is the bottom of painting? What is there drawing?
The difference between this film and contemporary art is that I understand the composition of the film.
Literature also passed through the Enlightenment as if Picture of the Middle Ages were drawn for the purpose of edification. Of course, I know that film was taking the similar steps course. No, it has consistently walked more political and more social criticism than any other art. It has been rated as good, if movie bring up a problem of social or talk about the dignity of human. In fact, movie was forced to more moral than any other art. I know that, in Hollywood, the tendency disappeared by commercial production, or the tendency used commercially. However, in Korea, it was considered that ‘theme’ to be the most important.
What movie has clear message. It is difficult to judge, whether or not it is right, whether or not it was beautiful, whether or not it is reasonable. Anyway, it seems that movie have no clear message. But it does not offensive. It the same as when I stood in front of contemporary art that I do not understand at all what the painting wanted to express . We do not try to understand it, just relax watch and enjoy.
As the story continues, you might have three questions. Why did father of heroine India (Mia Wasikowska) died? What relationship between India and uncle that suddenly appeared? (for your reference, in Korea, story sometimes have secret of birth ) And why did uncle appear? The movie spoke quietly without concealment about these questions at right time. I think that like a Hollywood movie by preconceived progress. The movie is not so bad, if you focus on shown method than content.
One reason why contemporary art seems to nice, because the work is not easy to understand intuitively, And in the same vein, this movie is very nice. I’m even considering watching the movie again. If this movie treat like a painting, the strangest thing is not ‘murder scenes or the corpse’, but ‘clothes of heroine India’. It seems that clothes shout “I am a Billy no mates!” I thought heroine of film “May (2002)”. (I have not seen yet in terror). Hovering over the lines is “If you can’t find a friend, make one.” India(Mia Wasikowska)’s behavior is not so unusual compare to her clothes. This movie is beautifully ugly, and quietly loud, and constantly pay homage to something to the other movie.
Though I reconsider the movie, I don’t know. However, the movie very attractive.

좀 난해한 영화였다. 영화를 보는 내내 아쉽다는 느낌이 드는 게 아니라 도대체 이게 뭐지 하는 생각을 했다. 나한테는 현대미술 같았다. 크리스티나 소더비 경매에서 몇 십억짜리 작품이 팔렸다는 기사를 본 게 생각난다. 7천만달러에 거래되었다는 Mark Rothko의 No.1에 참 심난했다. 왜 그렇게 비쌀까? 왜 이런작품에 환호할까? 이 그림은 어디가 위고 어디가 아래일까? 뭘 그린 걸까?
현대미술과의 차이라면 그래도 작품의 대략적인 설계인 스토리를 이해했다는 정도?
중세의 그림이 ‘교화’를 목적으로 그려졌듯이 문학도 ‘계몽’의 단계를 거쳤다. 물론 영화도 비슷한 단계를 밟은 것으로 안다. 아니, 다른 예술보다 더 사회비판적이고 더 정치적인 길을 걸어왔다. 영화는 ‘문제의식’을 제기하거나 ‘인간의 존엄성’ 등을 이야기하면 좋은 것으로 평가 받아 왔다. 어떤 예술보다 더 도덕적일 것을 강요 받은 셈이다. 헐리우드는 상업적인 영화제작으로 그런 경향이 사라지거나 혹은 그런 것 조차도 상업적으로 이용하고 있는 것으로 안다. 그러나 한국에서는 아직도 많은 감독이나 작가들이 ‘주제’를 가장 중요한 것으로 친다.
영화가 뚜렷한 메세지를 가져야한다는 것. 이것이 옳은 것인지 아닌지 혹은 아름다운 것인지 추한것인지 혹은 합리적인것인지 불합리한 것인지 판단하기 어렵다. 다만 이 영화는 뚜렷한 메시지를 가지고 있지 않아 보인다. 하지만 그것이 불쾌하지는 않다. 마치 뭘 그린건지 어떤걸 표현하려고 했는지 전혀 모르는 현대미술 작품앞에 섰을 때와 같다. 우리는 그것을 이해하려는 것 보다 그저 편안히 감상하고 즐기면 된다.
이야기가 진행되면 세가지 의문을 가지게 된다. 여주인공 인디아의 아빠는 왜 어떻게 죽었을까? 갑자기 나타난 삼촌은 인디아와 무슨 관계일까? (아무래도 한국에서는 출생의 비밀이 많은지라…) 그리고 삼촌은 왜 나타난 것일까? 이런 궁금증에 대해서 영화는 굳이 숨기려 하지 않고 그냥 적절한 시점에 조용히 말해준다. 예상과 다르지 않게 진행되는 영화를 보면 헐리우드 영화답다는 생각이 든다. 이 영화는 내용보다는 보여지는 방식에 초점을 두고 본다면 그리 나쁘지 않다.
현대미술이 근사해 보이는 이유중의 하나는 작품을 직관적으로 이해하기 쉽지 않다는 데 있다고 생각한다. 그런 맥락에서 이 작품은 매우 근사하다. 다시 보고 싶은 생각까지 드니 말이다. 이 영화를 하나의 그림으로 본다면, 제일 이상했던 건 영화속 살인장면이나 시체들이 아닌 여주인공 인디아의 의상이다. 시대를 알 수 없는 여성스런 옷들은 ‘나는 왕따에요’라고 소리치는 것 같았다. 영화 메이 (무서워서 아직 보지 못했다) 의 여자주인공이 생각났다. “친구가 없으면 만들면 돼”라는 떠도는 대사까지. 걸치고 있는 의상에 비하면 인디아의 행동이 그리 유별난 것은 아니다. 이 영화는 아름답게 흉측하고, 조용하게 시끄럽고, 끊임없이 뭔가를 대놓고 오마주하고 있다.
다시 한번 생각해도 난 잘 모르겠다. 그렇지만 이 영화 매력적이다.
