People often say difference between ‘pure’ and ‘innocence’. Nowadays, it is called naive person who is ignorant of the world, and it is typically used to deride. Well we can found the mean of ‘naïve’ from unspoilt looks of children and old farmer. Today, I will speak about Lee Byung-hun, who has ‘innocence’ and ‘meanness’ like as devil. What is the reason why an actor has conflicting images?
As for the temperament, outstanding aspect involves conflicting aspect in response. For example, overly kind person can be angry more than needs about noting. And person, who takes care of one’s own people, is also cold-blooded for antagonist. And sometimes, diligent person is also loafing around. And tidy person keep dirt at one part, too. And romanticist is also realistic at times. I want to call it “self-balancing”.
First, we have to think about ‘innocence’. Lee Byung-hun play an innocent and rustic guy, who did not suit his age, in the movie such as <The Harmonium in My Memory>(1999), <J.S.A : Joint Security Area>(2000), <Bungee Jumping of Their Own>(2001), <Once in a Summer>(2006), etc. The innocence does not mean good nature in here. His attitude, which “I don’t know nothing”, is faithful to his emotions like a child and hurts sometimes to the other. In <The Harmonium in My Memory>, he did hurt Hong-yeon(Chun Do-yeon), and in <Bungee Jumping of Their own> he is so nasty to his disciple who was guessed reincarnated. Especially, in <J.S.A : Joint Security Area>, his mistakes – or wrong judgment – killed North Korean soldier and make suicide South Korean soldier. And in the movie <Once in a Summer>, he disavowed any knowledge of the Jung-in(Soo Ae), who has communist sympathizer (North Korean partisans), in order to not going to jail. (For that reason, innocent she was imprisoned instead of him) In these movie, his innocuous innocence has done damage to the other.
Secondly, we have to think about ‘viciousness’. As you may recall the movie, which his darkness aspect underlined, above all there are <A Bittersweet Life>(2005), <Everybody Has Secrets>(2004), <The Good, the Bad, and the Weird>(2008>, <I Saw The Devil>(2010), <Three Extremes>(2004). Actually, in <A Bittersweet Life>, he was not called wicked man but he betrayed his boss as a mob caterer. In <The Good, the Bad, and the Weird> he plays superficial villain very well. In the movie <Everybody Has Secrets> he commit ridiculous act which he has date with three sisters at the same time. In < I Saw The Devil > he became a fiend incarnate in order to revenge on serial killer, who killed his fiance. In <Three Extremes> he shows his evil to intruder, who cut his wife’s finger. I have rated <Three Extremes> as the best work, which show darkness in earnest. Director Park Chan-wook takes darkness out of Lee Byung-hun, and since then, it seems that he plays the role many good villains.
An Example, which have both those personality, is the movie <Masquerade (Gwanghae: the Man Who Became the King)>. In the case of <Masquerade>, which borrowed concept of Mark Twain’ novel <Prince and the Pauper>, Lee Byung-hun played a double role. In this production, he played innocent comic storyteller (Ha-seon) and heartless monarch (Gwanghaegun ). At the end of movie, Ha-seon go his way and monarch do so. Now and for ever, I wouldn’t mind seeing the actor Lee Byung-hun who plays two characters well. And finally, I wonder his image in the upcoming movie <G.I.Joe2: Retaliation>.
배우 이병헌, 그 어린아이같은 순진함과 사악함의 공존
흔히 사람들은 순수와 순진의 차이점에 대해서 얘기한다. 지금은 세상물정을 모르는 것을 순진하다고 표현하며 약간 조롱 섞인 표현으로 많이 쓴다. 그래도 우리는 어린아이와 나이든 농부의 때묻지 않은 모습에서 ‘순진’의 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 오늘 말하려는 배우 이병헌에게서는 ‘순진함’과 동시에 악마 같은 ‘비열함’을 동시에 찾을 수 있다. 이런 상반된 이미지가 한 명의 배우에게 보이는 이유는 무엇일까?
사람의 품성에서 도드라지게 보이는 면은 반대급부로 상반된 면도 수반한다고 생각한다. 예를 들어서 과하게 친절한 사람은 화가 나면 필요이상으로 화를 낼 수 있으며, 자기사람을 잘 챙기는 사람은 적대적인 사람에게 냉혹하며, 부지런한 사람도 며칠씩 게으름을 피우기 마련이며, 깔끔 떠는 사람들도 어느 한 부분은 너저분하게 유지하기도 하고, 낭만을 찾는 사람이 더 현실적일 수도 있다. 나는 이것을 ‘자기균형’ 이라고 부르고 싶다.
‘순진함’에 대해서 먼저 생각해보자. 이병헌은 <내 마음의 풍금>(1999), <공동경비구역 J.S.A>(2000), <번지 점프를 하다>(2001), <그해 여름>(2006) 등의 작품에서 나이에 맞지 않게 아주 소박하고 순진한 청년을 연기한다. 여기서 순진하다는 의미가 착하다는 것을 의미하지는 않는다. “나는 아무것도 몰라요” 란 태도로 어린아이처럼 자신의 감정에 충실하며 때로는 상대방에게 상처를 주는 것을 서슴지 않는다. <내 마음의 풍금>에서 홍연(전도연)에게 상처를 주었고, <번지 점프를 하다>에서는 환생했다고 믿는 제자 현빈(여현수)에게 못되게 군다. 특히나 <공동병기구역 J.S.A>에서는 가장 순진해 보였던 그의 실수 — 혹은 잘못된 판단–로 북한 병사가 죽고 남한 병사가 자살한다. 그리고 <그해 여름>에서는 자신이 감옥가지 않으려고 빨갱이 아버지를 둔 정인(수애)를 모르는 사람이라고 부인한다. (그 때문에 무고한 그녀가 옥살이를 한다. ) 위의 영화들을 보면 악의 없는 그의 순진함은 다른 사람에게 피해를 주고 있다.
그 다음에 ‘악마적인 모습’에 대해서 생각해보자. 그의 어두운 측면을 부각시킨 영화를 떠올려보면 우선 <달콤한 인생>(2005), <누구나 비밀은 있다>(2004), <좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈>(2008), <악마를 보았다>(2010), <쓰리, 몬스터>(2004)를 들 수 있다. 사실 <달콤한 인생>은 악인이라고 할 수는 없지만 그의 직업이 조직폭력배이고 뒤에 보스를 배신하는 장면이 나온다. <좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈>에서는 평면적인 악인 캐릭터를 연기하는데 나름 괜찮았다. <누구나 비밀은 있다>에서는 세 자매와 동시에 연애하는 웃기지도 않는 짓을 저지른다. <악마를 보았다>에서는 약혼녀를 죽인 연쇄살인범에게 복수하기 위해서 악마 같아 진다. <쓰리, 몬스터>에서는 아내의 손가락을 잘라가는 침입자에게 악마성을 드러낸다. 그의 어두움을 본격적으로 드러낸 작품으로 <쓰리, 몬스터>를 꼽으면 좋을 것 같다. 박찬욱감독이 그의 악마성을 잘 끄집어내주었고 그때부터 본격적으로 좋은(?) 악역을 많이 맡았던 것 같다.
이런 두 가지 성품이 모두 나온 영화로 <광해>를 꼽을 수 있다. 마크 트웨인의 <왕자와 거지>의 설정을 차용한 <광해>의 경우 이병헌은 1인 2역을 한다. 이 작품에서 그는 순진한 만담꾼 하선과 냉혹한 군주인 광해군을 연기한다. 영화는 하선은 하선대로, 광해군은 광해군대로 자신의 자리를 찾아가는 것으로 끝난다. 계속해서 이병헌이 두 가지 캐릭터를 잘 살렸으면 한다. 끝으로 곧 개봉할 <지.아이.조2>에서는 배우 이병헌이 어떤 모습을 보여줄지 궁금하다.
