Review

If this movie liken boyfriend, he never beat around the bush. He is always confident, and he does not darkness. Besides, he confessed his love for me. So I prefer this man to bad guy. Answer to the name of rustic man is ‘Fist of Legend’. The reason why the movie was called ‘rustic’ is not because scene of retrospect about the past. If anything, that part of the film feel refined these days that retro are in fashion. In fact, what happens at the glittering ring is rustic.

The ring became a fancy stage of real show. The men, who were boss of high school ‘bully’ in their school days, have come out on the stage. Fighter from around the country came out in TV program ‘Fist of Legend’ and they heated up the TV program. And finally, three fighter of legend appeared a topic at the center of heated debate. They are once best friend, who were forced to appear on stage through each person because of their complicated circumstances. First, Lim Duk-gyu (Hwang Jung-min), who was failed in his dream to became a boxing champ of the world, was a lone father with a daughter. Second, Lee Sang-hun (Yu Jun-sang), who was boss in school gangster, works for a major corporation as a department head without pride in order to be on a fast track to the top. Third, Shin Jae-seok (Yoon Je-moon), who was boss in Nam Seoul High School gangster, became a small-time street bum. When they are boss in school gangster, they were gorgeous and their friendship seems to be wonderful. However, they who became breadwinners in his late forties look shabby.

In the movie, the TV program show humble them ‘the stage’, and promise past glory and money. The stage, which occupy most of running time about one hour and a half, was worth seeing. Because of premise that they are not professionals but amateurs, their all activities are acceptable and make be strained. Despite I am woman, I felt an impulse run out stand and fight. However, the film develops into expected course after the early portion of the film. It’s hard to create an exciting movie when everyone already knows what’s going to happen. At a time like this, director Kang Woo-suk decided to face the attack to take the bull by the horns. It seems to attitude that if the way is right and have to go, he would gladly go. These pushy aspects, which I will go to the wall, come into its own in the other artsy-fartsy pretentious films nowadays. The movie is, frankly, neither aesthetic nor new. But story of characters seem to reflect the current of Korea. And the movie have true feeling feature of the life in its own way.

It is said that when the economy is in bad shape and life is hard, retro style will come back. However, the retro style is coming in vogue continuously after IMF, perhaps because economy is not once going well in Korea. In the last year, one of these movies like ‘Sunny’ and ‘Architecture 101’ were very popular, and TV program ‘Reply 1997’ was popular, too. There is work like ‘Almost Che’ even though it didn’t make a splash in Korea. We are mired in a collective Mood Cela Syndrome? All Memories of the past is beautiful? If you can return the past, you will go back to past? Perhaps, it was not “How great everything was back in the day” that director want to mention. I thought that director’s message to us in the present moment through the movie is ‘encouragement’. That is not so bad.

PS: The movie ‘Running Man’ will be released at a similar time. That movie is fresh and good. The movie appeals to my taste than ‘Fist of Legend’ 10 times as much, however, I have nothing to say about ‘Running Man’. It is a curious thing, indeed.
