Storyline :
This story is that a woman trying to get into the Cheongdam-dong( Beverly Hills in Korea) dream of a better social status through wedding , and a man trying to find the ‘true love’ because wounded from approach women for his money.

How is ‘Alice in Cheongdam-dong’ different from ‘Cinderella’ story?
This TV drama have the traditional plot that good and pretty woman is married to bad and rich man. This ‘Alice in Cheongdam-dong’ TV program’s main target is young lady of teen and twenties. And with their mother and aunt also see. ( According to an audience rating survey company Nielsen Korea, ‘Alice in Cheongdam-dong’ which aired on Jan. 20, has recorded 14.4% nationwide daily rating.)
In Korea, If TV drama program exceed 20% rating at least, that is called a popular program. It is honor that terrestrial TV Broadcastin such as KBS, MBC, SBS could have. In this way, It is not a proud rating for weekend drama aired on SBS. In addition, considering luxury casting like ‘Park Si-hoo’ and ‘Moon Geun-young’ even more so.
This drama is based on two kinds of fantasy. One is ‘There is a beautiful and pure love’, the other is ‘The poor can afford to move a step up in society with rich through wedding, too’. This two fantasy is major issue of drama. In that respect, it is similar to the story of Cinderella.There are, however, attempt to change it at ‘Alice in Cheongdam-dong’.
- An insurmountable barrier of rank and fantasy about wedding
Heroine Han Se-kyung broke up with boyfriend because the reality of poverty. The boyfriend said this tried to break up with her on purpose.
“If we were married, our combined pay is barely about 350($3,500) . You and me, capital and interest of student loan is 40($400) a month. For food 50($500). Transportation, communication expense, bills is 50($500). We couldn’t dare to jeonse(※Deposit system house prices in half ). Key-money is 1500($15,000) and rent 45($45) a month. Capital and interest is 50($500) a month because deposit to borrow from the bank. For my mother’s hospital bill and medicines 330($3,300) a month. In that way, deficit 215($2,150) a month, mounthed 2,580($25,800) a year. Do you solution? Let’s stop hope-torture(※To let someone feel hopeful is the greatest torture) each other.”
In a sort time a highly developed in Korea. Before that, One get a job just having graduated from college. Then if young couple save money, they were able to buy a house and bring up children. Then, how about now? Now, it is difficult more than before. Work hard for save money, buy a house, get married and bring up children? That’s just ridiculous. There are no job and not enough to earn for get a house. In addition, if they were working parents, they can’t take care of baby. So, young people are frustrated.
- Heroine not good-hearted any more.
In the other Korean TV drama, heroine work hard to success in tough situation. The process is nice(?) and result are also satisfied. By the way [Alice in Cheongdant-dong]’s Alice Se-kyung did not so. Instead of, she talk like that “Nevertheless, I will hard anything from now on”. She admit reality that “No matter how hard I try, I cannot be like them”. So, real story start from here. She pledge to hook a wealthy man even though she is to be bad woman. Intentional or not, She cheat rich man who crush on her, and she play ‘good girl’. Her presence deny fantasy that “There is a beautiful and pure love”.
- Fantasy is another face of ‘reality’
It’s a screwball romantic comedy about ‘a woman think of wedding as a business, and a man look for pure love’. Well, drama don’t betray wish of audience and they grow up the love to some extent. Probably, the story ends will be with the familiar ‘all live happy ever after’. Author may want to tell “love is worth, although not beautiful and pure”. Anyway, the drama present just wedding between poor woman and rich man, actually, it is tell us that fantasy cannot happen in reality – As it appeared in TV drama- , paradoxically.
※ means that ‘Cheongdam-dong’: If you catch on ‘cheongdam-dong’, you need first to know ‘gangnam’. ‘Gangnam’ is a place name. Probably, you may ‘PSY, Gangnam style’. Seoul, Korea’s capital, is divided into north area of river(gangbuk) and south area of river(gangnam) around the Han river. In general, gangnam means 3 fashionable neighborhood (songpa, seocho, gangnam) in Seoul. Cheongdam-dong is one of places that. Living in Cheongdam-dong, is that the upper class.

[청담동 앨리스]는 신데렐라 이야기와 어떻게 다른가?
이 TV드라마는 가난하지만 착하고 예쁜 여자주인공이 성격에 문제있는 부잡집 아들과 결혼한다는 전통적인 이야기구조를 가지고 있다. ‘청담동 앨리스’의 주요타겟층은 10~20대의 젊은 아가씨들이고, 그들의 이모와 엄마세대가 함께 볼 수 있는 드라마다. ( 21일 시청률 조사회사 닐슨코리아에 따르면 지난 1월 20일에 방송된 ‘청담동 앨리스’는 14.4%의 전국 일일시청률을 기록했다. )
한국에서는 TV드라마의 시청률이 적어도 20%를 넘으면 인기가 있다고 말한다. 지상파 방송국 KBS, MBC, SBS 만이 가질 수 있는 영예다. 그런면에서 보면 SBS에서 방영한 주말드라마치고 그렇게 자랑스럽게 떠들만한 성적은 아니다. 거기에다가 박시후와 문근영이라는 호화 캐스팅을 감안하면 더욱 그렇다.
이 드라마는 2가지의 판타지에 기초한다. 하나는 ‘아름답고 순수한 사랑이 존재한다’는 것이고, 또 하나는 ‘가난한 사람도 부자와 결혼을 통해 신분상승을 할 수 있다.’이다. 두가지 판타지가 이 드라마의 주요 쟁점이 된다는 면에서는 신데렐라 이야기와 비슷하다고 할 수 있다. 다만 ‘청담동 앨리스’는 이것을 약간 변형하는 시도를 한다.
- 넘을 수 없는 신분의 장벽과 결혼에 대한 환상
여주인공 한세경은 가난이라는 현실 때문에 남자친구와 헤어진다. 남자친구는 헤어지려고 일부러 여주인공에게 이런 얘기를 한다.
“결혼하면 둘이 합쳐봐야 겨우 월급 350정도야. 너랑 나랑 학자금대출 원금이자 한달에 40. 식비 50. 교통비, 통신비, 공과금 50. 우리형편에 전세 못 얻으니까 월세. 보증금 1500에 45만원. 1500도 대출 받아야 되니까 이자원금 한 달에 50만원. 우리엄마 병원비, 입원비, 약값 한달에 330.한 달에 마이너스 215만원. 일년이면 마이너스 2580만원. 답 없지? 우리 이제 서로 희망고문 그만하자. “
짧은 시기에 급성장한 한국. 그전에는 대학만 졸업해도 취직해서 부부가 알뜰하게 돈을 모으면 집도사고 아이들도 키울 수가 있었다. 그럼 지금은? 지금은 힘들다. 열심히 일해서 돈모아서 결혼하고 집도사고 애도 키워라? 정말 웃기는 얘기다. 일할 직장이 없으며, 돈모아도 집을 살수 없고, 맞벌이로 돈벌면 애를 돌볼 사람이 없다. 그래서 젊은이들은 좌절한다.
- 여자주인공은 더 이상 착하지 않다
다른 한국의 TV드라마라면 이런상황에서 여자주인공이 상황에 굴하지 않고 뭔가를 열심히해서 성공한다. 그 과정 또한 착하고(?) 결과 또한 흡족하다. 그런데 [청담동앨리스]의 앨리스 한세경은 그렇지 않다. “그래도 열심히 할거예요.” 따위의 말을 하는 대신에 아무리 열심히 해도 그들(?)과 같아질 수 없다는 걸 인정한다. 여기서 진짜 이야기가 시작한다. 나쁜여자(?)가 되서라도 돈 많은 남자를 붙잡겠다고 다짐한다 의도하지 않았지만 이 과정에서 자신에게 반한 ‘돈많은 남자’를 속이고 그가 원하는 ‘착한여자’를 연기한다. 여자주인공의 존재 자체가 ‘아름답고 순수한 사랑이 존재한다’는 판타지를 부인한다.
- 판타지는 현실의 또다른 얼굴
결혼을 비지니스로 접근하는 여자와 순수한 사랑을 찾겠다는 남자의 좌충우돌 로맨스. 물론 드라마는 시청자의 바램을 배반하지 않고 둘은 그럭저럭 사랑을 키운다. 분명히 끝은 해피앤딩이리라. 작가는 ‘아름답고 순수하지 않더라도 사랑은 가치있다’라고 말해주고 싶었는지도 모르겠다. 어쨌든 드라마는 가난한 여자와 부자가 결혼하는 것을 보여줌으로써 사실상 그것이 드라마에 등장할 만큼 현실에서는 일어날수 없는 판타지란 걸 역설적으로 말해준다.
※ 청담동이 의미하는 것 : 청담동을 이해하려면 우선 ‘강남’에 대해서 알아야 한다. ‘강남’은 싸이의 ‘오빤 강남스타일’에 나오는 지명이다. 한국의 수도인 서울은 한강을 중심으로 강북과 강남으로 나누어져 있다. 일반적으로 강남은 서울의 25개 자치구중에 제일 잘산다는 3개 자치구(송파, 서초, 강남)을 말한다. 청담동은 강남에 있는 부자들의 거주지중 하나이다. 청담동에 산다는 것은 상류계층이 되었다는 것이다.
